How to Sublimate a Grad Stole: Step-by-Step Guide for Crafting a Keepsake They'll Never Forget

Supplies You’ll Need:

To get started, make sure you have the following items on hand:

  • Sublimation-ready white stole (polyester material)

  • Sublimation printer with sublimation ink (like Epson EcoTank with converted ink or Sawgrass)

  • Sublimation paper

  • Heat press (recommended over an iron)

  • Heat-resistant tape

  • Butcher paper or parchment paper (for protecting your press)

  • Lint roller

  • Heat-resistant gloves

  • Design software like Canva, Photoshop, or Silhouette Studio

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Design Your Layout

Use Canva or your favorite software to create your custom design. Consider:

  • Graduate’s name

  • Class year

  • School logo or colors

  • Personal photos or achievements
Design the left and right sides separately if you want symmetry or different artwork per side.

TIP: Download your final design as a mirrored image to ensure it presses correctly!

2. Prep the Stole

Use a lint roller to clean both sides of the stole. This helps prevent random fibers or specks from interfering with your print.

3. Print and Cut

Print your mirrored design on sublimation paper using your sublimation printer. Trim any excess paper to reduce overlapping lines or press marks.

4. Line It Up and Tape It Down

Lay the stole flat on your heat press. Position your printed design face down on the stole where you want it to appear. Secure it with heat-resistant tape to prevent shifting.

5. Press It

Cover the design with butcher paper to protect your press. Use these heat press settings:

  • Temp: 385°F–400°F

  • Time: 60 seconds

  • Pressure: Medium to firm

Always test a scrap stole first to avoid ruining your main project.

6. Carefully Remove

Once pressed, put on heat-resistant gloves and carefully remove the paper. Let the stole cool flat to prevent warping.

7. Optional: Press Other Side

Repeat the process on the opposite side if you want a full stole design.
